Barbados Activities: The Conga Line Carnival

The Congaline Carnival (now discontinued) was one of my favorite Barbados activities.

This Barbadian Carnival was held annually at the end of April (usually over the last week) and finished on May 1 (May Day – a national holiday) with a May Day Parade. Congaline Village, which is located in St. Lawrence Gap, Barbados,is the namesake of the festival that began with the what was often referred to as the longest Conga Line in the Caribbean islands.

Starting in 1994 and running through 2004, the Congaline Festival was primarily a music festival centered at the Dover Playing Field in St. Lawrence Gap. The musical entertainment included mostly local musicians playing calypso, steelpan, socca and gospel.

St. Lawrence Gap, which is well know as one of the main focal points of Barbados nightlife, became especially popular during the Congaline Carnival, and featured some of the best performers from Barbados and other Caribbean Islands.

If you are looking for other activities in Barbados in late April, Reggae on the Hill has become popular in lieu of the Congaline Carnival.

The diversity of people and music made the Congaline Carnival one of the best activities in Barbados, and it is a shame that this festival has been discontinued. With that said, however, I really enjoy (and highly recommend!) the Barbados Reggae Festival that now takes place in late April.
